Once a year or so, a dad and his two sons ref a game together. ‘There’s a lot of pride.’
Derek Linn’s basketball officiating “career” got off to an inauspicious start.
Linn was 14 years old, tagging along with his father, Bob, who was working Jerry Hoover’s D-One basketball camp at Spiece Fieldhouse at Fort Wayne. “I thought I’d be shooting at an empty basket and watching basketball for a couple days,” Derek said.
The camp was short on officials. At his father’s urging, Derek put on the stripes, grabbed a whistle, and worked the camp as an official for the first time.
