My Officiating Journey
Sports Collaboration Founder and Owner, Greg Evers, started playing American Football in Australia in 1999. On top of his playing career, he decided that he wanted to get involved in officiating. During his playing career, he was selected to be representative of the New South Wales Wolfpack five times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2008 & 2014), winning the National Championships during the first four campaigns. Following the 2008 campaign, he was selected to the Australian Outback team, which undertook a tour of England, playing against England and Sweden.
During his playing career he was also gaining and developing his skills as an official and in 2012 he was selected to officiate his first game at the National level, as part of the officiating crew of the Australian Gridiron League. He has been consistently officiating National level games ever since.
Greg’s International officiating career started with selection as part of the officiating crew for the Australian Outback game against the Polynesian Warriors in 2013, followed by the Australia U19 versus New Zealand U19 game in 2016. Greg’s International career accelerated further following his selection as part of the Australian contingent of officials to attend the IFAF U19 World Cup in Mexico in 2018. He was also fortunate to travel to Bologna, Italy and officiate the IFAF European U19 Championship in 2019.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic towards the end of 2019, all IFAF-related international tournaments were either cancelled or postponed, and all international travel from Greg’s native country of Australia was forbidden. During this time, like the rest of the world, Greg spent the time evaluating his current goals, setting new ones, and putting plans in place to start achieving those goals.
Following the re-opening of the international borders between Australia and the rest of the world in late-2021, Greg started to plan and organise trips to the United States of America to attend various officiating clinics and continue his growth as an official.
To become the best official that he can be, Greg’s goal is to relocate to the United States of America and continue his officiating career, learning from the best, and implementing skills that he learns into his own game. This journey will provide its challenges, especially considering that Greg has his wife of 20+ years currently located in Australia looking after their 5 children, however he wouldn’t be able to embark on this very exciting and challenging journey without the support of his family.
As part of his journey, Greg will be writing regular journals as a way of keeping people updated with his progress, but as a way of helping to inspire more people to not only become involved with officiating but showing that with the right mindset and attitude anything is possible and that no matter how big or out of reach a dream may be, by taking the required steps and actions you can achieve it.
Greg’s goal is to become the best American Football official that he can be, whether that leads to an opportunity to officiate at the NFL, NCAA Div 1, or any other level within the American Football community, it will be an exciting and extremely interesting journey to follow.
